Around the 9th millennium BC, agriculture developed in western Asia, based on early types of cereals and the domestication of sheep, goats and pigs. By 6000 BC, villages with widespread new technologies such as copper working had appeared. Irrigation canals were constructed to bring water to the Mesopotamian lowlands, a feature which laid the foundations for growth of the world's first cities, in around 3500 BC.
